Interfacial Electrochemistry


This course starts with the establishment of the basic thermodynamic principles to deal with electrochemical systems and the presentation of different types of electrochemical equilibria. Transport in solution is introduced and electrified interfaces are elaborated upon, including a discussion of the models of the electrical double layer. Electrokinetic phenomena are also covered. Special emphasis is placed on describing amperometric methods and electrochemical impedance.


The aim of this course is to develop the students’ knowledge of interfacial electrochemistry. This includes both the understanding of fundamental aspects of electrochemistry, as well as techniques for characterization of the electrochemical processes at different electrode surfaces. The students will be knowledgeable on what happens when an aqueous medium is in the vicinity of the surface and be able to describe the structure that occurs in an electrochemical cell. Secondly, students will be able to interpret the current response as a function of time of a redox system when the electrode potential is varied by a sequence of potential steps.
