The colloidal domain: association colloids, colloidal dispersions and macromolecular solutions. Shape and size of particles. Optical, transport and flow properties. Self-assembly: the hydrophobic effect; molecular-thermodynamic aspects. Micelles: structure and properties; thermodynamics and kinetics of micellization. Structure and dynamics in: bilayers, liposomes and membranes; lyotropic liquid crystals; emulsions and microemulsions. Phase transitions and phase behavior. Colloidal forces: DLVO theory; non-DLVO interactions. Colloidal dispersions; flocculation and coagulation. Polymers in solution and polymer-surfactant systems. Modern industrial and technical applications of colloidal systems. Lab experiments and presentation of selected topics.


To provide advanced knowledge on: the characterization of properties and structure-property relationships of different types of colloidal systems; the thermodynamic and physical principles governing colloidal assembly and phase behavior. Discussion of relevant applications of colloids in industry, pharmaceutics, biomedicine, consumer products etc.
