Introduction to biophysics and bio-informatics


Introduction to biology

  • Cell biology (From DNA to proteins, Cell architecture and motility, The Cell cycle)
  • Biochemistry (The elementary bricks of life: proteins, DNA, RNA, membrane/lipids)


  • Fluorescence Imaging, Fluorescent probes for biology,
  • Principe of a microscope,
  • Analysis of molecular behaviors in live cell using fluorescence imaging,
  • Biophysics of membranes,
    • Membrane transport: vesicle fusion, ion gradient concentration and biological examples,
    • Patch-clamp technique for measuring ionic properties of cells membranes.
  • Introduction to Atomic Force and Transmission Electron Microscopies,
  • Electron microscopy
    • Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy
    • Application to biophysics: DNA, protein structure, cell structure, local cell ionic concentration
    • Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM): Theory and application of AFM.
  • Single molecule studies (DNA imaging, biopolymer elasticity).

Practical courses

  • Bioinformatics: Visualisation and manipulation of biomolecule structures

Lab training

  • Cell staining and observation in optical microscopy
  • AFM measurements on DNA


Give some knowledge on biophysics concepts and standard methods. Illustrate the importance of chemistry at the interface between biology and physics
