Materials Properties and Applications
Content
Physical properties of materials: electrical, thermal, magnetic, optical and mechanical properties. Structure-property relationships. Durability, toxicity, biocompatibility, availability, recyclability and price stability. Application of concepts to metals, polymers, ceramics, composites, semiconductors, soft materials, nanomaterials and biomaterials. The effect of material processing on material properties. Useful range of practical applications. Discussion of current advanced applications for selected materials. Lab demonstrations, presentations and visits to external labs.
Aims
To provide an advanced understanding of the relation between: material molecular structure and physical properties; processing and the obtained bulk properties; functionality and applicability.
