Jean-Michel LOURTIOZ was born in Lens, France, in 1948. He graduated from Ecole Centrale de Paris in 1971, received the equivalent of the M.S. and Ph.D degrees in physics from the Paris-Sud University in 1975 and 1981, respectively.

In 1976, he worked at "Compagnie Générale d’Electricité" (CGE). From 1976 to 2016, he has been a scientist at the "Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique" (CNRS), and has worked at the "Institut d'Electronique Fondamentale" (IEF), which was a joint research unit between CNRS and University of Paris-Sud, France. Since 2016, he is emeritus research director at CNRS and is working with the Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (C2N), which was formed from the merger between IEF and LPN (“Laboratoire de Photonique et Nanostructures”). He is also honorary Vice President of Paris-Sud University after serving as Vice President of this university from 2013 to 2018. In May 2021, he co-funded the startup SOY PV with Daniel Lincot, research director at CNRS.

During his career, Jean-Michel Lourtioz has assumed different leadership positions. From 1990 to 2000, he directed the "Fast circuits and quantum optoelectronics" group at IEF. From 1996 to 2000, he also led the French CNRS research group on Microcavities and Photonic Crystals. From 2000 to 2010, he was the head of IEF, which grouped about 150 permanent researchers, technicians and administrative staff and 90 PhD students, post-doctorants and other temporary personnel. In 2008, he initiated with Jean-Yves Marzin and Claude Chappert the Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (C2N), which was further created in 2016 as a joint research unit between CNRS and University of Paris-Saclay. In 2009 and 2010, he has been a member of the steering committee of the French NanoInnov Alliance for nanotechnology, and a member of the French Allistene Alliance for computer sciences and technology. From 2010 to 2014, he has been Vice President of the UniverSud Paris academic hub. From 2013 to 2018, he has been Vice President of Paris-Sud University for sustainable development and large real estate projects.

Jean-Michel Lourtioz's work has covered a broad variety of topics including: molecular lasers, nonlinear optics, semiconductor lasers, fast optoelectronics, quantum well intersubband devices and physics, semiconductor nanostructures, photonic crystals and metamaterials (see description of research results). Since 2010, Jean-Michel Lourtioz has contributed to large structuring research projects. He has also contributed to the dissemination of scientific knowledge especially in the field of nanosciences and nanotechnology and that of sustainable development. He has been the coordinator of the MOOC “understanding nanosciences” from 2017 to 2020. He is presently coordinating the SPOC “challenges of the green transition”, which is a digital course for all undergraduate students at the University of Paris-Saclay. Jean-Michel Lourtioz is the author or co-author of about 450 publications, patents and communications, comprised of 192 articles in peer reviewed journals, 20 books or book chapters, 238 presentations, including 51 invited talks, in conferences, workshops or symposia.

During his career, Jean-Michel Lourtioz has been involved in many cooperative initiatives with industry in the domains of microelectronics and telecommunications. In 1988, he was accepted as IEEE Sr Member. He received the "General Ferrié" award from SEE in 1992, and was awarded by the French INPI trophy in 2008 for his initiatives in technology transfer and innovation as the head of IEF. His initiatives to promote innovation are perhaps best illustrated by the co-creation of the startup SOY PV in May 2021.
